The 2018 International Conference on Spreading Depolarizations will be held on September 22-24, 2018, in Boca Raton, Florida, USA, as an official satellite of the Annual Meeting of the Neurocritical Care Society (September 25-28, 2018). Both program committees have recognized this as an excellent opportunity to promote translational research and education in treatment of acute neurologic injuries.
iCSD is an annual meeting dedicated to the study of spreading depolarizations, the mass waves of cellular depolarization discovered by Aristides Leao. Depolarizations are a key pathologic mechanism in a variety of neurologic disorders and have been studied for over 70 years. Annual meetings to discuss these phenomena were initiated in 2003 with the formation of COSBID. In 2017, the meeting was re-formulated as iCSD to cultivate an open community and recognize spreading depolarizations as its own field of translational neuroscience. We welcome you to participate in iCSD2018, whether to learn or to present your latest findings from the lab or the clinic. With presentations ranging the gamut from clinical outcomes to electron microscopy, we believe you will find the ‘depth of field’ in translational flavor is unparalleled! - KEYNOTE SPEAKERS
Keynote Speakers
David Okonkwo, MD, PhD, Clinical Director of the Brain Trauma Research Center, University of Pittsburgh. Dr. Okonkwo has advanced novel neuroimaging modalities for personalized management of TBI and is principal investigator of a nationally funded clinical core to study TBI pathophysiology. He has contributed as a thought-leader to many clinical research initiatives and has been one of the most proliferative contributors to COSBID research efforts.
Marc Simard, MD, PhD, Professor of Neurosurgery, Pathology and Physiology, University of Maryland. Dr. Simard is known for ground-breaking research into the molecular pathophysiology of cerebral edema following stroke and cardiac arrest, including discovery of the Sur1-Trmp4 channel. His basic science insights are now being translated in active clinical trials of glibenclamide.
Ari Ercole, MD, PhD, Lecturer and Consultant Anaesthetist, University of Cambridge. With a doctorate in physics, Dr. Ercole adds a unique dimension to the Brain Physics Lab that studies the relationship between volume, pressure, and blood flow in the brain and has developed the pressure-reactivity index and the concept of individual optimal cerebral perfusion pressure. Dr. Ercole also leads efforts in analysis of high-resolution ICU data and is a CENTER-TBI investigator.
- WORKSHOPS
Workshops
A great benefit of partnering with the Neurocritical Care Society Annual Meeting is access to the many workshop that NCS will offer on Sept 25, the day immediately following iCSD. The full list of workshops is here. Of note, for the first time at NCS there will be a workshop on Clinical Monitoring of Spreading Depolarizations to meeting the growing demand for education in this field. The full details are below. This a great opportunity to be introduced to the basic techniques, methods for data display and interpretation, and review real clinical data. Please spread the word to interested colleagues and consider signing up! Note that it is possible to register for the workshops alone, even if you do not attend the main NCS meeting.
Course Title: Clinical Monitoring of Spreading Depolarizations
Course Director: Jed Hartings, PhD
Faculty: Jens Dreier, MD; Raimund Helbok, MD; Martin Fabricius, DMSc; Brandon Foreman; MD, FACNS
Description: Spreading depolarizations (SD) are an emerging hot topic in neurocritical care as a critical mechanism of lesion development in stroke and TBI, and thus a potential target for precision medicine treatment. This workshop will provide an introduction to the basic skills and techniques required to monitor and diagnose SDs in patients at your institution. We will review all practical aspects of performing electrocorticography (ECoG) and EEG to monitor SDs in acute brain injury, including electrode types, electrode placement, requirements for data acquisition, data filtering and visualization, and terminology. We will cover invasive subdural strip and depth electrode techniques, as well as manifestations in scalp EEG recordings. In practical exercises with real patient recordings, participants will learn how to review data and identify SD at the bedside. The curriculum is targeted to a general audience, including physicians and researchers.
Meeting Registration
Advanced registration has closed. Onsite conference registration will be available for $250 from 12:00-13:45 on September 22 at the meeting registration desk. The off-site dinner can also be booked at that time for $70.
